Jaime + Kory - a Lumberjack Firefighter themed mountain wedding in Julian, San Diego, CA
I was on my way out to a nice sushi dinner in Las Vegas last month when my phone rang. I debated whether or not to pick up, but after looking down and recognizing the number as a San Diego area code, I finally answered. On the line was a somewhat frantic bride inquiring about photography services – because her photographer had just cancelled on them – only 3 days before their wedding! "Ok, just breath" (I told myself more than her) "we are going to figure something out here". If I had known then that her fiancee was a firefighter, I might have understood why she wasn’t in full on panic mode – they were focused on putting out the fire!
Long story short, I flew home from Vegas Wednesday night late and came home to a signed contract and payment in my inbox. Friday morning I loaded my car and headed up the mountain. I Still could not believe that I was going to be shooting a wedding for this couple who I knew next to nothing about! We had not had time to have all my usual meetings, or get my questionnaire's filled out, or go over a shot list, or for me to even find out anything about them or their love story! This was so opposite of how I normally prepare for a wedding day, but I was determined to do a great job for them, so I put my game face on and just went for it! About an hour later I arrived at the picturesque Pine Hills Lodge, nestled cozily in the mountains of Julian, near San Diego, CA. With majestic oak trees and beautiful grass filled meadows, this historic log cabin venue was the perfect spot for Jaime + Kory’s rustic, lumberjack -firefighter themed wedding!
In keeping with the theme, the wedding colors were black, red and white, and the couple cut their cake, which had already been "cored" with a champagne glass (per firefighter tradition) using a fire-engine red axe in lieu of the traditional cake cutter. And it’s a good thing we had a whole battalion of firefighters as groomsmen because Jaime + Kory had their hearts set on a sparkler exit (even though we were in "Smokey the Bear" terrority up there)! Well this grand exit couldn't have been more perfectly suited for a pair whose hearts are so aflame for each other!
And although the firefighters are clearly the heroes here, it felt great to be able to “save the day” for this awesome couple – and I’m thankful that Neka Rae was available on such short notice to second shoot with me.
Grab your fire extinguishers folks, because this wedding was smoking hot!
